Profile

The Department of Multilingual Learners Program Assistant is a non-aligned, non-exempt/hourly position that will report to the Director of Programs for Multilingual Learners. The Program Assistant will conduct regional and national research about the various facets of multilingual programs, “newcomer” programs, parent support programs for multilingual families, and co-teaching to share with EL teachers from other communities across the US about developing models of EL student support. They will provide logistical support to Multilingual Liaisons, students, BSD Staff, and partner organizations in a variety of roles, such as data entry into the Liaison Ticket System. Responsibilities include collaboration with EL teachers to communicate and order instructional materials and various subscriptions for the Curriculum Department. Along with data gathering, reporting and research, the Program Assistant will ensure proper compliance with ESSA, Title III, and other federal and state mandates. This position has fairly flexible hours. 

The essential functions of this position include

Conduct regional and national research about various aspects of programs for multilingual learners, such as newcomer programs, parent support programs for multilingual families, and co-teaching to share with EL teachers from other communities across the US about developing models of EL student support. 

Research training and professional development opportunities for EL teachers and mainstream teachers to learn about other programs across the US, co-teaching methodologies, and supporting new arrivals. 

Support compliance with ESSA, Title III, and other federal and state mandates as well as program development through data gathering, reporting, and research

Maintain general organizational support for all ML programming, including but not limited to Parent University, summer programming, Ellevation, training, meetings, and student support. 

Support Multilingual Liaison Coordinator and Director of ML Programs with general support for Multilingual Liaisons and community outreach. 

Work with outside organizations to address any gaps in service and work together to provide opportunities for families and youth in EL programming.

Work with EL teachers to fulfill their needs with the annual ordering of instructional materials and subscriptions through the Curriculum Department 

Organize data entry of Liaison Ticket System to communicate with teachers, principals, and Multilingual Liaisons about student support and updates. 

Support summer programming by coordinating with partner organizations, BSD Staff, Multilingual Liaisons, and students.

Assist with the planning and implementation of a statewide conference about the education of multilingual students in Vermont to be completed no later than June 2023

The required education and experience for this position include 

Education

Minimum Required: Bachelor’s degree in the field of education, social services, humanities, or public administration

Eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship

Experience:  

Minimum Required: Demonstrated experience working with grants and understanding compliance and regulations

Knowledge of the Burlington communities and local organizations to build and strengthen community partnerships

Understanding of Cultural Competency

Ability to develop new organizational tools to better support programming for Multilingual Learners 

Knowledge of best practices regarding frameworks of student and family support 

Ability to research, develop, and build professional development opportunities

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Working knowledge: Sufficient familiarity with the subject to know basic principles and terminology and to understand and solve simple problems.

General knowledge

Sufficient knowledge of a field to perform most work in normal situations. The work calls for comprehension of standard situations and includes knowledge of most of the significant aspects of the subject.

Thorough knowledge: Advanced knowledge of the subject matter. The work calls for sufficient comprehension of the subject area to solve unusual as well as common work problems, to be able to advise on technical matters and to serve as a resource on the subject for others in the organization.

Comprehensive knowledge: Requires complete mastery and understanding of the subject. This term should be used sparingly and only for unusually exacting or responsible positions required to originate hypotheses, concepts, or approaches.

  Preferred Attributes:  

Training and/or experience with Multilingual Learners.

Familiarity with Ellevation or other data systems and performance measures to support grant funding 

Experience in a professional/teaching-learning community or similar learning community.

Ongoing educational training

Knowledge and experience with diverse Burlington families and youth
