Develops a knowledge base of company operations, duties and responsibilities of a Life underwriter. This Includes significant self-study and training of prescribed course material as well as actual case work. Learns how to evaluate individual Life applications and benefits, including how to Underwriter medical, non-medical and other product information. Uses appropriate guidelines to ensure rate classification is in line with corporate underwriting philosophy and risk profile. Communicates with agents and applicants and consults with underwriting management and medical directors as needed. With the guidance and assistance from underwriter trainer, the Life Underwriter will have an underwriting authority to approve new life applications and policy benefits up to $300,000. This is an entry level position with the expectation that within 18 months, upon successful completion of two ALU introductory courses and demonstrated proficiency in Claims, incumbent will be considered for Sr. Life Underwriting role.
Essential Job Functions
Research and assess life expectancy for life insurance applicants; Research medical and non-medical factors using appropriate resource material for new applications or existing policies.
With guidance and consultation from underwriting management, evaluate, classify and approve individual applications and benefits within approval limit.
Update underwriting files with clear and concise documentation reflecting thought process to support recommended final action.
Gain an understanding of compliance and regulatory landscape within the scope of underwriting.
Appropriately refer complex, difficult or substandard risks to underwriting management / trainer with suitable recommendation of act ion.
Training on risk assessment Develop close collaboration and business relationships with internal and external customers, including agents and clients.
Report appropriate information to the MIB, Inc. (pull language from original job description).
Maintain confidentiality of underwriting information in accordance with established procedures and Federal and State regulations.
Provide timely and professional communications to internal and external customers.
Meet productivity and quality SLA's Performs other duties as assigned.
Preferred Skills & Abilities
Relevant work experience will be considered in lieu of 4 year college degree.
Strong technical and analytical skills.
Strong customer service focus with direct customer contact.
Education Requirements
4 year College degree.
Attainment of or actively pursuing FLMI and FALU designations (required).
Experience Requirements
One year in Life Insurance Industry experience preferred.
Special Skill Requirement
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written (required)
Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment and decision making skills
Strong PC skills (MS Office) & ability to perform general mathematical calculations (required)
